View Full Version : When drifting turns ghey...

**IMPORTANT** This thread is not intended to be flaming...
As you all know, drifting has become a mainstream pastime in America as a result of Superstreet and SuP3rtUnR have showed us drifting from Japan. Then came the video games (InitialD), the American championships (D1 and Formula D) and eventually, a movie, I am sure (TF&TF3, no doubt). At some point, you are all aware that Drifting will become gh3y.
And then there is the whole concept of whether drifting is even anything new, compared to power sliding so many of us are familiar with. In SCCA, drifitng violates about 75% of what we learn in, for example, Solo2. Rather than the car being rigid and sticking to the ground, and avoiding lost traction and such, drifting focuses on losing that traction (albeit, with elegance). The car's suspension are set up to violate most principle fundamentals learned in autocrossing or road racing - worn tires, soft rear suspension, excessive handbraking/rear brake bias, etc. The only benefit that comes from drifting, speaking as a driver, is the driver being in tune with suspension changes, the road and the car.
So you guys have the r1c0rz and the amateur/professional community not liking you very much. And it's not just because drifting has seen the return of the commando/park bench wing...
Sooner or later (probably sooner), drifting is going to turn :gay2: .
My question to you, in this forum, is how many of you think you will continue to drift after the bandwagon leaves you?
Do some of you intend on abandoning the psuedo-sport after it's popularity has been breached?
What are your current and future intentions with the sport?
Where do you see it going, if you disagree with my assesment?
What can the drifting community do to assure itself that it won't turn ghey, or delay The Gheyness?
Personally, I think it's great that you all take interest in doing something with your cars, and that most of you keep it off the streets in a sanctioned event. I also appreciate the knowledge that is being acquired and shared through development of both the variety of cars and the sport - it is very much on a grassroots level. However, I think drifting will be the gayest thing on Earth in 1 year, mostly to no fault of those who practice it.

i will still do it when i can. i belive drifting could have been much more sucsesful if it wasint for assholes like the king daddy ricer, lieberman (director of F&F) making a movie is one thing, but just trying to fucking sell out the scene left and right to make yourself money, and try to call it "helping the scene" is bullshit. we have just been turned into a parade to milk us into a big joke.
its prolly been a long term scheme to one day let V8s still stay the big dog, i mean, everyone is now getting a v8, its making sense now.

That is when the real drifters separate from the posers. After the "bandwagon" rolls out the real drifters will keep getting sideways. I plan on getting sideways in my next "project" and it will problably be after the bandwagon. :thumb:

Wouldn't you rather exhaust your efforts in something more timeless, such as road racing or autocrossing? Dare I say, drag racing?
I just got off the Houston SCCA site and I didnt see anyone named Ormand in the results for this year so why are you saying 'us' and 'we' when you're not even out there doing it yourself?

Are you saying that because people drift that they don't know how to drive fast around a course or set up a car properly? Well, it is obvious to that you don't know how to setup a car yourself from this statement:
The car's suspension are set up to violate most principle fundamentals learned in autocrossing or road racing - worn tires, soft rear suspension, excessive handbraking/rear brake bias, etc.
I normally wouldn't have minded a post like this in a different form but the way you presented it, like you knew better than the drifters out there, really annoyed me because it is so obvious that you don't. You simply tried to intimidate the people less knowledgable into thinking that you knew what you were talking about by spewing out key works like 'SCCA' and 'Solo 2'. That really bothered me because that is where I got my start in competative driving and to see someone like you use it to give yourself a 'holier than thou' perception is really disgusting.

I think drifting is gay now. It is nothing but a Bandwagon. Unless you are a drifter older than 21 or 22 and have been doing it for a few years you are bandwagoner. The newest evolution of Rice.

I used to autocross a few years back but then stopped because it was getting too expensive. I have done it 3 times earlier this year in my new car but stopped because, again, I don't have the resources (or time) to commit to autocrossing as seriously as I'd like to. And from my understanding, SCCA co-sponsors or co-sanctions some of the major drifting events to keep them safe, like the past Formula D. I don't use "SCCA" or "SOLO2" to make myself sound or appear more important than anyone else.
If you read the very 1st sentence in the thread, you would understand that this thread is not intended to flame anyone. I am just asking a reasonable question regarding the future of drifting.

Again, I didn't see anyone named 'Ormand' in ANY SCCA event held this year. Please point out the months of the events that you went to. The SCCA puts out a championship points list and event if you went to 1 event this year your name should be listed there.

I did read it and went into the body with that in mind but as you kept writing the more obvious it became that you were simply trying to put down people who drift in a backhanded mannor.

It is called the bandwagon. We always had rice F&F made it worse. Now instead of ricer fly bys there will be ricer slide bys. I just dont want my car to get hit by some hop on the wagon "that looks cool kid". Drifting in Japan did not need "big events",it took a few years of underground to make it.
This will be rice in 12 months.

so if what ur saying is drifting is gay cuz of the ricers, then so is every other car activity you can think of. talk shit about the idiots....not the event itself

I'm not going to get into FF drifting. The people who go out to events, no matter how new, are not bandwagoners in my book. As long as they are out there doing it and learning how to do it I think it is great. However, those who talk about doing it, buy a RWD car and say they do it yet never do then yes, those people are certainly bandwagoners.

my turn: what the hell are you talking about. soft suspension, totally wrong. most people who drift, autocross also. in fact, many drifters learned their driving skills from autocorss. we drift b/c it's fun.
here's what a bandwagoner is- they see all the cool drift cars in the magazines. go out and buy the same car. rather than learning how to drift or autocross, they just make it look like a drifter and turn it into a show car or something.
Ormand: I seriously doubt you go to any autocross events. you're car looks more like a show car than a weekend racer to me. and btw, you're just jealous because your accord show car can't drift because it's wwd

LOL @ nissan being the new honda... honda just now realized what a joke they are and made the s2k.. which is still a joke.
i think the creator of this thread drives a fwd car, and is in denial. not everyone who drifts goes around talking about it as if they are some kind of god. and the ones walking saying they drift, are normally terrible at it. it is fun and it is a good opportunity to learn about the handling of your car. plus we all know drift cars are sexy as hell.

most people with sr swaps run 250-320 rwhp, dare i say.. race them?
or what about the pro driftings we go and see with 450-750 rwhp.. i bet u can out autocross, road race, and drag them... NOT
why are you even trying, i think everyone knows why FWD was invented, and i hate to bring this up, less costly car production, and it just so happend "safety" came with that.

Drifting is fun, no doubt about it, it wont be gay to me whenever the general public says so.
Whats your point with the tuning of drift cars and how the SCCA says you shouldnt do everything drifters do. Thats the point, its not racing, its just horsing around, thats what you have to understand. And no, it isnt new, just to us.

everythings a bandwagon. if people keep callin new shit a bandwagon even the term bandwagon will be a bandwagon.
this thread has made its point from page 1. even if drifting becomes gay by the guys who can only drive in a straight line, people will still drift regardless. now its just at the point to if you can drift and you love it youll defend it. but if you suck at driving and put forth no effort because chicks wont suck your cawk a year from now, your gonna say driftings gay.
