With the black or red top being roughly the same price, pick a blacktop cylinder head if you have the choice. It has heat sinks built into the casting. I'm not sure how effective they are, but you may as well have them. $500 is kind of expensive for a head. Expect to pay roughly $250-300. A friend of mine got a head with block for $400 w/o sensors and accessories.

Some of the later model '94 Redtops, right before they went to blacktops also had heat sinks. My friend Paul's '94 180sx redtop had heat sinks. But, hes right get the black-top S13 if possible, supposedly had they also have stronger rocker arms; which is a weak point of the head; if you want to see what happens to a SR head when rocker arm breaks, drop by. :eek3: Of course thats with certain drivers (not saying any names-you know who you are) that over-rev past 7500rpm and downshift like mad without at least a decent rocker arm stopper (not Greddy).. opt for HKS, Tomei, etc.
However, its not that big an issue or necessary of you don't constantly over-rev/red-line. I use to shift at 7-7200 (I know a little above the peak) and had no problems with stock SR head.
