View Full Version : STi drift?

Okay, so i've got this friend who went from having a FWD to having an STi recently. We've been having this argument over whether or not he can drift it. I'm not saying that it's impossible, I'm just pretty damn sure he can't do it. He's just simply not a skilled enough driver. But that being besides the point, how would an STi drift? And don't worry, i'm not going to let him try it, b/c i know he will kill himself in the process. Or his car. And I'd cry over the car just as much.

it's possible to drift an awd, but not as easy as a rwd...
grabbing the hand brake, breaks the rear end loose just fine, but the best way to get sliding is to flick the car... and stay on the gas...
also, stiffen the rear as much as possible, that will make the rear end swing out a bit better. inflate the tires as much as possible also helps...
awd responds very well to left foot brakeing as well. have your friend practice some slaloms in the car unti he can go through them with the tail wagging out behind him a bit... once he can do that, it's very simple to understand how to throw the car into a controlled drift.

in a lot of the drift compelation vids, there is always that yellow evo. i think its awd and it was drifting pretty damn good. it's definately in the drift mix video. notice the driver had great skill but it did look a little wet

hahaha... I have no clue who y'all are talking about...
But that's okay. So the sti CAN drift... That's what i thought. but i'm not going to tell him how. He'll end up like teh upside-down evo.

The Yellow Evo might've been the Jun Evo.

rwd = oversteering
awd = countersteering

Hmm by what I've from AWD folks is that pulling an ebrake in a AWD will F-up your tranny. I wouldn't suggest that.
I also hear the STI has some type of modulation to shift power from the front to the back. So that and practice might help a lot.

His has a driver-adjustable center differential. This means he can disperse the power in whichever way he feels. any where from 50%front50%rear to 35%front65%rear.
BTW, i've heard that the skyline GT-R, at least the 34's, come w/ that to where you can adjust 100% to rear. There's no point to that comment, i just thought it was badass, if it was true.

Plus, AWD looks a million times better.. 4 wheels spinning looks gnarly as hell. The neat thing about awd is also how much less countersteer is involved to hold a drift since all 4 wheels lose grip. Don't forget though.. that means your friend has to be prepared to spend $$$$$ replacing twice as many tires as everybody else.

On top of that, 4 wheel drift is hard as hell to control. Keep in mind, he isn't as experienced as some of us. He's only had this car for about a week and a half.
If youre friend bought the car to specificaly drift on pavement, hes an idiot. Tell him to go drift on rugged terrain...where drifting began:cool:

That totally goes against the whole concept behind AWD. If you going to drift, get a RWD car. Whats gnarly as hell is breaking all 4 tires loose from 1st-3rd while going straight:eek3:

It was a girl driving the car in Europe.

IIRC it's up to 84% to the rear you can adjust up to leaving only 20% or so to the front.

What did you expect, I used to own a couple subaru's. I was just telling you what its called, dont get youre feelings hurt now.:rolleyes:

Please don't tell my all-trac that.. I have to replace the rear brake shoes for the e-brake cause I grab that sucker so much doing road rallys...
of course, it's a toyota, known for pretty much bullet proof everything...

i dont rallye, so by all means correct me if im wrong, bt watching wrc on speedvision i see them pop the ebrake to rotate the car in so they can just nail the gas to rotate the car around and out of the corner. i think what tkrunclemax was talking about is the n00b drifters who pull and HOLD the ebrake and try to floor it at the same time if they are tryign to drift an awd car. IIRC awd and just from my driving experience and just plain common sense it seems to look like you would pop ebrake+clutch, which is fine. but i think he was takling about people who pull and hold the ebrake without pushing hte clutch. which wrx have a weak tranny stock and the center diff sure wont like it either.

yeah but WRC cars, as of the moment the E brake is engaged, are not AWD anymore.
And they use specialized gear boxes, differentials, and "e brake" setups.
When you pull the Ebrake in a WRC car you don't need to clutch, it instantly disengages the rear wheels so the front wheels can pull through the slide.
they have a lot of tricks up their sleeves.
