Sounds like its on a role, ill make some calls if yall can help me out by looking around too. ive seen a few places and im going to give them some calls to ask if we could rent the space. obviously the more people the cheaper each person has to pay but the more people the more most likely we will have to pay as well.... the money would obviously go to renting the space as well as insurance just to give the people a peace of mind. ive got a 2000 MRS ( mr2 spyder ) and an 88 rx-7 but i blew the side seals... and an auto 90 300zx...
anyway lets try to get this organized now that we have a few people intrested.... any more ideas?

shouldn't you worry about knowing how to drift properly before putting together a team?

Its all how you look at it, i feel that we can all teach each other and see each others strengths and weaknesses, I know how to drift mentaly and read about it and have done some drifting a while back so i know how im suposed to do it just need to do it more often to get better , thats what this group is for, learning with others who want to learn and not get into the way or worry about messing up. It makse sense to me :)

wow. for the elventy billionth time, a bunch of n00b drifters tryign to teach each other isgoign to lead to nothing but bent wheels and marked curbs and possibly a trip to jail.
-mikespeed

houston has drift schools and people that will help you learn, send mikespeed95 an aim, he cant post for some reason but he doesnt mind helping n00bs.

seriously, thats nice, but how much is it and where is it located, I cant afford to pay more than 40 dollars and im sure lots of people cant spend much money, and im looking for something like a parking lot to rent for us to do this legaly, anything else than a school will end up with bent wheels, it only comes with practice that someone can get better and i can't speak for everyone else but i dont feel comfortable being around awesome drifters when im trying to drive, i end up concentrating on how great they are vs. brushing up on my driving skills. this is all ment to be fun, lets leave it as that. :)

The only way you'll be able to acomplish this idea of yours legally would be to own some private property with a big as open piece of blacktop or concrete. Getting somthing insured is WAYYY out of your price range, but they can't tell you shit if you're on private property (non-commercial). If you got a rich realative with land and about 20 grand to do some building....let me know. :thumb:

so you wont pay more than $40 for a drift school but youll pay thousands of dollars to rent a parking lot?

I have NEVER bent a wheel or practiced new tricks in a parking lot. everythign i have LEARNED has been at a dailydrifter event. I drift in parking lots sometimes taking people for rides. but a bunch of people who dont even know the basics tryign to teach each otehr in an empty parking lot is not giong to result in anything but bad things. go somewhere where experienced peopel can help you learn. they dont mind, or at least the guys i know dont mind. just dont be joe-highschool thinking youare D1 material running your mouth and you shouldnt have a problem having the experienced drifters help you out.

again, come to a local event, HMP has them almost weekly and dailydrifter has some freaking bad arse events with instructors that will have you drifting your tires off by the end of the day.

btw this is mikespeed, not tryignt to be mean, just help you not mess up your car / hurt yourself.

I also want to thank all of you for yalls imput and advice.

there is a big differance in a 40lb bike and a 3000lb car.. more risk. Save your money spend the $100 bucks or so and take the class. you will get the opertunity to have somone in your car and they might even drive iy so you can see how it works behind your wheel. Trust me I have been a party of some of thoes after hours drift meets, bad things can happen.. its just advice. all the same good luck.

Thanks and im sure ill take some classes hopefully soon, this is just a thing to relax and brush up on some skills and meet people who feel the same. it would also be alot of fun for the group to go to some of the local events togeather. This is a learning experiance not a party :) and you have to take things slow and start from the ground up and obviously taking lessons is extreamly important which will come on the way as we practice.

Thanks again and keep up te good info and ideas, its nice to see people intrested :)

if all you have is 40 dollars drifting is not the sport for you.

factor in the cost of tires, repairs (you WILL crash. even the pro's do)
and replacing bent and broken suspension pieces.

drifting is not something for people concerned about spending money...especially on a school which in the end will save you a lot of money and help you avoid wrecking while learning to drift.

I just want to thank all those who are so supportive, everything is starting to move and looks like it will be alot of fun. Oh, and my money issue is due to my twins and my 3rd one on the way along with my house and car notes so give me some credit :) i do my best with what i have. i have wheels and tire discounts and guys to get me parts for what i need. Drifting as well as any racer of any kind is more than a sport, its life and rythem and often cant be put into words.... All those who drift understand the dangers and sacrafices one must take reguardless if its on a track with a teacher or in my backyard. what im trying to do is basicly a warm up lap.

Thanks again for all of your support.

practice....then buy some tires.....then practice more......buy more tires.
just when u think u got it, practice more.
the way i do it is go out and think of one thing you wanna do (ie. high speed turns, weight shifting, whatever) then go at it till u get it right. and if u screw up, which u will, dont et upset. few of my friends quit trying after a couple days just cuz they couldnt do the "perfect drift" you just gotta take it step by step.

It shouldent be bad, every car that i have drifted has had stock shocks, In some cases it was actually easier to whip the rear out, as long as you dont have wheel hop then it shouldent be a problem, its just a more sloppy and loose but if you have truly lurned how the car responds to your actions it could perform just as well as a car thats fixed up, its all the driver.

tein ball joints and rods for the power steering
sprint springs w/ tokico blue shocks
hks pillow ball mounts

I like to drift but I could never afford to do it regularly. :/

Hey there used to be this place near galveston I took a ferry to a rural area with a giant vacant beach I could do all kinds of crazy stuff in the sand without destroying my tires. that was a long time ago before I moved north though (I just moved back to the houston area recently) , so I don't remember how to get to it... does anyone know what i'm talking about?

ye theres 2 sides of this story. 1You can go to the class which is good for types of learners, or 2actually practice illegally which is good for other learners. If you read super street theres japan drift teams that learned and practice on the streets and they aren't d1. I would recommend a roll cage and then all stock parts on ur car. If you know who Tarzan is hes a drift king and he says you should practice on stock parts. My friends has an A86 and has wrecked 3 times tryin to drift so its an expensive sports. Doing it illegally can get ugly so do what u think man.

ProjectS15

i wouldnt recommend a roll cage unless the car is gonna b in Formula D
D1 or any AutoX

you got a metal cage in the car to protect you but if your usin the car for a daily driver and u get into a wreck, your gonna hit the cage or worse

andrave
10-25-2004, 11:12 AM
I'd recommend trying to drift what you got, and seeing where you have problems... without that you are just gonna be spending money on upgrades with no real sense of direction.
as for the dude who wants to cross the ferry in galveston, its the port bolivar ferry, and that whole area up towards crystal beach is pretty calm at night. cops patrol tho.

A roll cage saved my ass a couple weeks ago when i totaled my corolla when I was racing someone... I hit the cage a couple times but I had padding on it, and I would highly recommend a roll cage to anyone who is trying to drift.

also if you wanan learn a good place to get basic car control skills is an auto-x. i have 2 years auto-x experience in a sts class civic, and hs rental cars. i can honestly say most the tricks i used throwing the rentals around thru gates are the ones i use drifting.

ifyou really cant go to a drift event (even though you can, anyone can). go to an auto-x, at least youll learn something. if you cant do either stop calling yourself a drifter.
