great. now everyone who didn't know about it knows and thinks its the coolest. I hate mtv. I guess the bandwagon has finally left the station, last call for anyone who wants to hop on. Lets watch prices of [imported RWD car] climb even higher.

And as import prices soar, domestic prices shall fall, bringing my dream of LS1 ownership one step closer to reality. bwahahaha!!

Whatever you say homie... BTW, Drifting is going to blow up in the US within the next few years... It's going to be the next big thing whether you like it or not. And alot of kids are going to kill themselves. Watch out when F&F3 comes out.

Anyways, you guys will see. It's pointless to point fingers at one entity. Everyone wants in on the hype. Everyone wants to make money.

Matt.

Great job on bringing back an old thread :thumb:

I know the thread's old but I'm bored at work and thought I would toss two cents in.

I agree with the bandwagon left the station statement. I was in Walmart the other night and I must have seen 5 different model cars or R/C cars in the toys department that had drift something written on them.

I made a comment in another thread that I must have looked at 20 different 240s (s13-s14) in a month's time that were ratted out and leaking for every seal with totally ruined suspensions. Most was obvious drift practice from someone who had no concept of car care.

So yes, the price of RWD imports is jumping high. There are alternatives, though. Most people are migrating to 240s which is unfortunate because I really do love the car and it's too bad I won't be able to find one in the comming years when I'm able to tackle another 240 project.
Because of all of the 240 madness with 90% of professional drifters in the US using S13s and 14s people are slowly leaving Corolla GTSs alone. I've noticed Corollas dropping in price a few hundred dollars here and there. Lots of GTS owners who have already modified their cars are moving on to 240s now as well. Miatas are still dropping in price and more than adequate for drifting. They drop in pirce even more in the winter :) I've seen several people move on to these microscopic roadsters just in the last few months.

As the years crawl by you'll notice a drop in the prices of newer RWD cars. The only ones of which would really be worth noting being base model WRXs (sorry Evo fans, they aren't selling enough to be plentiful) with RWD only conversions or at least active diffs controlled by the driver or the ever popular, light weight RX8s and Mazdaspeed Miatas. The 350Z is imported and embraced by the oddly different import tuner culture of today so I'm sure it will be a contender in the comming years when the price drops on it as well.

I'm sure some domestic companies will stand up and take note and we will see a release of USDM light rear drive cars. Hey, it almost happend with the Dodge Razor. I think we'll see designs like that taken more seriously in the very near future.

I guess all you can do is sit back and say it's really a shame that more light RWD Japanese cars weren't brought to the US back in the day when they were in production, when it counted. I could see this day comming even back then. And it's just sad that it's finally here.

To stay on topic; I have no idea why MTV would involve themselves with Drifting culture. I often see MTV branching out to different subcultures as a means to stay alive. MTV in it's origional form would have never survived today's society. I give them props for sticking around this long. They are good businessmen.

However, I don't think MTV's drifting show or documentery or whatever would have added much to the Drifting explosion that's uppon us now. Let's face it Drifting's hotter and more talked about that Import Drag racing now. At it's hight Drifting will probably be more popular than Import Drag was at it's hight.
Just pick up an issue of Import Racer and you'll see what I mean. It's become almost a straight drifting mag. Even old guy car mags like Road and Track and Motortrend have some 2 page write up on drifting every month now. As sales of Honda Tuning go down (the civic is fading fast) they are desperately tossing themselves on the crutches of articles featuring Drift S2ks and even NSXs. Even some mostly drag racing magazines are trying to find loopholes to jump through.

It's an interesting turn of events that's happened in a relatively short time. Just 2 years ago people were calling my S13 a chick car. I doubt anyone thinks of the 240 as a "girls" only car now... even in a rural community.

No doubt.

I've decided to lie low and go back to messing with mini R/Cs (bit char-g, Digi Q, Microsizers) for now. It's a pretty cheap hobby with lots to do. I'm just going to maintain the Miata for now. Maybe I can find a good 240 when the dust clears. Maybe I'll have the time and cash to really work on it this time, too.

Drifting is quickly becoming a motor sport for the rich. It's ashame it started out as something totally different.
